Spotfish - Where to fish in the UK

Docklow Pools

We’ve been established since 1972, so possibly the oldest commercial fishery in the UK. Certainly the prettiest and most picturesque. We’re set in 110 acres of splendid rural countryside. Beautiful surroundings, fantastic scenery, fresh air, relaxation the delights of Herefordshire.

Eight well established fishing pools and lakes stocked with Common carp, Roach, Grass carp, Ide, Barbel, Rudd, Tench, F1’s, Hybreds, Bream, Catfish, mirror Carp plus Canal / Snake, a 60 peg pole anglers dream.

Cottage accommodation of the highest quality set in beautiful herefordshire landscape. Accomodation is easily described under either “Premier or Traditional properties”

Here’s a little about our lakes….

Moby Dick (day ticket)
Along with the Mickey Mouse the Moby Dick lake is one of two day ticket lakes. There is no night fishing on any lake apart from the Private Major Bill lake.

Beautifully set amid tree lined banks. Gear up for the big carp! Offering 35 pegs with 3 islands on the water. Again pole, waggler, feeder, ledger will catch fish, along with floating bread. Great pool for the pleasure angler and beginner. Stocked with Carp (over 20 lbs) Bream, Chub, Barbel, Roach and Rudd.

Originally the “Moby” was the specimen lake and has been part of the family since 1984. At that stage it was called the doubles pool, because it was stocked with a large number of double figured carp. They were some roach in there and over the years the silvers have really taken off. Its now regarded by some as the best silvers lake in the country. All the fish in the lakes are in good condition, yet add that to catch some special fish of raoch up to 2lb and you know youre onto a winner.

In the last twelve months Matt Hayes, Kevin Green (editor of improve your coarse fishing), Lee Edwards, Grant Albert, Des Shipp amongst others have all enjoyed great days on the Moby!

Last summer, regular to Docklow, Johnny Evans caught a 26lb common carp on a pole from his regular middle island peg. Regularly doubles are coming out. Add that to the quality silvers it makes a cracking fishing lake for day tickets and guests.

Mickey Mouse (day ticket)
A lovely pool that is the favourite of the residents for it’s mixed stock of fish. Forty pegs each with it’s own character. A comfortable day’s fishing, you’ll never know what the next bite brings!....and you’ll get plenty of them! The Carp are into double figures but the gudgeon aren’t!

This possible the oldest commercial pool in the country, dating back to 1972. Originally it was a duck pond with some old trees growing out of the middle. That now has become a true angling feature.

Figure of eight (day ticket)
The original lake at Docklow featuring numerous lillies which hold plenty of fish. This is your best bet for a mixed bag. Stocked with Carp, Tench, Roach, Rudd, Bream, Barbel, Chub and Crucians. All methods work well especially pole and straight lead.

Farmer Jack (residents only & members only)
A pool of character solid with fish! Regular big weights. Offering lily pads out to the middle of the pool as a feature. Combined with the Bridge Pool offering sixty pegs. Pole or waggler venue. Stocked with our usual mix but be prepared to hook into a big carp well into double figures!

Match Pool (residents & matches only)
The Docklow Pool is regarded as one of the best lakes in the country to most match anglers and is a favourite to regulars at Docklow because of the quality of the fish including the bigger carp. That said its a beautiful lake which has been established since 1978. It has a strong head of silvers, including quality Roach, Chub, Barbel and Bream.

The match pools has 30 comfortable concrete pegs, and the pole, waggler, feeder or ledger will catch you fish on this water. Our residence match on a Tuesday is always held on the Match lake. For match results please look at the results page on our website.

It’s stocked with Carp to an average of about 6-7lb and plenty of double figures. This pool boasts a five hour match record of 246lbs in Febuary 2003.

The Snake (residents & members only)
The Canal or Snake as it has become known is a pole anglers paradise varying from 9 – 14 metres wide. Stocked with Barbel, Tench, Chub, Rudd, Bream, Perch and Carp, the 108 pegs twist and wind to create swims of unusual features. Its ideal for pole fishermen who like to fish canal stretches in comfort.

We aren’t a Carp obessed fishery by any means and like to enjoy great all round fishing with beautiful scenary. The Snake is a venue that we are really proud of and have spent a great deal of time and effort to get it to its high standard today.

Most Saturdays in the summer a handful of anglers have a weekly knock up on the “Snake”. In the summer time the winning weights are pushing high 30lbs which is a terrific weight for silvers. The good thing is that everyone catches so the weights are very close. This is the only match we have on the snake, so keep nets are not allowed otherwise. For match weights see our match results section

All the pegs are concrete platforms so its perfect to position yourself comfortably. The snake isnt deep, merely 3 feet in the middle. The far bank isnt pegged so fishing with a pole against features is perfect. The trees and greenary looks splendid throughout the year and you’d be unlucky not to see the Kingfisher family at some time or another sitting quietly down the Snake.

There are still Carp in the snake from years gone by, although the majority have been moved professionally into the Figure of eight. So be prepared that there are still a few monsters in there.

The Stock Pond (residents & members only)
An old established pond with trees all round. Totally secluded and very picturesque. This is strictly a member / residents pool open to float anglers only. A connoisseur’s pool for the angler who enjoys being with nature. There are good Tench in this pool together with Roach, Rudd, Bream and of course Carp that run to 20 lbs.

Major Bill (residents & members only)
Our biggest lake, approx 7 acres with a large island in the middle. A beautiful pool, trees all the way round with just 20 Carp pegs.

For the bivvy boys among you there’s Catfish over 50lbs. Mirrors, Commons and Grass Carp up to and over the mid twentys and plenty of doubles. Not an easy lake but rewards are there if you are prepared to put the time in. Grass Carp up to 30lbs, plenty of cats growing and plenty of doubles.

There are no day tickets on the Major Bill. The Major Bill is available to residents (caravaners must be members), and members. Double Rod ticket holders and over 18yrs only. Please see rules page for further specifics

There are just 40 paid up Members for the Major Bill, with a 4 year waiting list. To apply for the waiting list you must be known to us, but will manage expectations, space becoming available are few and far between.

A weekly ticket for the lake (Monday to Friday only – no weekends) is available through the office, docklowpools@hotmail.com when the pool is quieter in early Spring and Autumn. The weekly ticket is not available now in the Summer, as our paying guests come first.
